When asked the infamous question, “What do you do for a living?” an artist’s answer is often two-fold.  “I am an artist, and I work for [fill-in-the-blank company].”

Creatives are notorious for having day jobs.  This position, commonly held to pay for the necessities of life, may come with a benefit package that includes both frustration and inspiration.  The frustration being time spent at the day job consequently limits time that can be spent creating.  The inspiration is a non-studio environment that can develop skills and sometimes influence new art ideas.

Featured Artists:  Naima Bond, Javier Flores, Hyeon Jung Kim, Madeline Maser, Michael Milano, Nina Pagano, and Eric Stefanski.

Creative Coworking is a members-only workspace for creative professionals, graduate students, and entrepreneurs.  They provide a quiet comfortable workspace with a sense of community.

Abryant Gallery is a rotating contemporary art gallery that showcases new and emerging artists online and in commercial and residential spaces.  We offer a variety of high-quality paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, film and video, photography, fiber, and performance.

Take a hike in the new CAC exhibition space and encounter the nature-based work of Christie Helm, Adrienne Pike, and Connie Wolfe.

Curate by Angela Bryant of Abryant Gallery

Christie Helm’s paintings are abstractions of tree trunks.  Their vivid colors quickly draw the viewer in, but it is their textured surface that encourages a longer stay.  Helm’s trees are symbolic of both growth and life, and she conveys this idea through her careful layering process.  Building up each surface through multiple layers of paint, Christie allows the journey to be just as important as the destination.

Adrienne Pike harvests her own clay from a local creek to make her pottery.  Natural elements are constantly infused into her process, and her unique usage of horse hair brings an unexpected visual treat.  By allowing the hair to singe onto the newly fired pot, she creates an innovative mark-making tool that mimics both the beauty and unpredictability of nature.

Connie Wolfe is inspired by the rich textures and colors found in nature, and she uses paper to translate her meditative observations. Wolfe pays careful attention to shadows and negative space, always allowing plenty of breathing room within her work.  Viewers are not only left with a feeling of peace, but hopefully a desire to view nature in a more thoughtful way.

Abryant Gallery and artist Alison Rhoades teamed up with ROW in August to provide and curate artwork for a Silent Art Auction.  The exhibition/auction featured various local artists who donated pieces that related to the healing properties of water, with proceeds benefiting Recovery On Water (ROW).  ROW is a rowing team that provides an environment and opportunity for Chicago’s survivors to get fit, fight back, and have fun.

The event was held on Friday, July 23rd from 6-10pm at Temple Gallery, located inthe Pilsen Artists District (at 1749 South Halsted), and raised over $1,500 for the organization.

Recovery on Water began as a collaboration between Sue Ann Glaser, an Evanston breast cancer survivor, and Jenn Gibbons, a rowing coach at Ignatius Chicago Crew (ICC).

So I’m catching up on my blogging…Lisa Majer has a unique way of bringing color and light to a canvas.  Her cave paintings while many times consisting of black and other dark colors, are the perfect backdrop for light to burst forth.  We teamed up with fashion designer Jodi Arnold  (and host Beta Boutique) to provide artwork that paired beautifully with Jodi Arnold’s edgy clothing designs.

A Chicago Artists’ Coalition (CAC) selected and sponsored exhibition.

Curated by MA Candidate Fang-Tze Hsu and the artists.

Four artists were selected for a CAC (Chicago Artists’ Coalition) sponsored exhibition.  Again and Again is an exploration of pattern and sequence and will be on display from April 29 – May 29.  There will be a Preview Reception Thursday, April 29 from 6-9pm, and an Opening Reception Friday, April 30 from 6 –9pm.  The exhibition is taking place in the Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago and gallery hours during Art Chicago Weekend April 30 – May 30 are as follows:

April 29 6-9pm, April 30 and May 1 11am –7pm, May 2 11am –6pm and May 3 11am – 4pm

Regular gallery hours: Fridays 4pm-7pm, Saturdays 1pm-5pm, and by appointment

Again and Again:  An Exploration in Pattern and Sequence presents a group of artists composing time, space, and sequence through their practices.  By incorporating the unique architecture of the exhibition space, the artists construct a directional path that creates dialog between their pieces and the viewers.

Jiwon Yoon engages in mark-making that is likened unto ritual.  Again and again she places layers of paint to build up and off the canvas.  Angela Bryant creates patterns through her shaped fabric installations that invite the viewer to be embraced by their color and scale.   HUR diligently paints the same canvas systematically morning after morning, saves the water, and uses it to paint at the next session.  Robin Dluzen takes one image and recreates it over and with the assistance of different media each time.
